Seitel Gets More Bytes per Buck with Xserve RAID

Cover Image
Seitel maintains and licenses one of the largest collections of seismic data in North America. Gathered at great expense over vast areas of land and sea, seismic data is consistently ranked by oil and gas companies as the most valuable tool they employ in the search for new reserves and the exploitation of existing fields. That’s because it can be used to get an image of the structure of the earth’s subsurface, revealing where the most “black gold” is likely to be found and helping to maximize recovery rates. Not only valuable, Seitel’s seismic data files are also massive: A single file can consume more than 100 gigabytes of storage space. With performance and cost per terabyte as top priorities, Seitel chose Apple Xserve RAID to store its collection of seismic data.
