Product:  Plumtree Software Wireless Device Server
Company:  Plumtree Software, Inc.
Type:  Software
Description:  Customers can retrieve portal resources from virtually anywhere by using the Wireless Device Server, an add-on component to the Plumtree Corporate Portal that allows users to access supported Gadget Web Services from mobile devices such as WAP-enabled mobile phones, wireless-enabled Palm? handheld computers, and BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds. The Wireless Device Server supports the world’s major wireless Internet formats, including WML, HDML and HTML. For the first time, end-users now have access to interactive services from multiple enterprise applications in a single place. The Wireless Device Server performs the following tasks: ? allows users to log-in to the portal from devices with numeric keypads, ? offers a user interface by which wireless device users can navigate between portal pages, ? and delivers low-bandwidth, limited-input, small-screen versions of Plumtree Gadget Web Services to those devices. Because the Plumtree Corporate Portal already authenticates against a wide range of applications and extracts the most useful resources from those applications based on a user’s needs, the portal is the ideal platform for brokering corporate electronic resources to wireless devices. Device-Specific Content Wireless devices have different screen sizes and different input mechanisms: A wireless-enabled Palm? handheld computer works differently from a WAP phone. Rather than attempting to shoehorn the same content into different devices, Plumtree’s Wireless Device Server is sensitive to the needs of different devices. When a user logs in, the system detects what kind of device she is using and presents information in a format compatible with that device. For example, if a user’s page contains e-mail messages and appointments, a WAP phone first displays a summary: the number of new e-mail messages and the number of appointments that day. A wireless-enabled Palm? handheld computer, which offers a larger screen and scroll bars, displays the first eight messages and the day’s remaining appointments. The Wireless Device Server thus offers a compelling user experience on any kind of device. Cost-Effective Wireless Delivery Plumtree’s Wireless Device Server lowers the cost of wireless-enabling your business: ? Eliminate training costs: End-users employ wireless versions of the same Gadget Web Services they use through their conventional browsers, so there’s no need to train them on a new software package. ? Manage one application: Rather than purchasing and managing separate wireless packages for different enterprise applications, Wireless Device Server customers can deliver wireless access to major enterprise applications through the portal. ? Manage devices centrally: Because the Wireless Device Server automatically detects devices and presents the appropriate content, there’s no need to maintain separate sites for different devices.
